 Step 4: Drill pilot holes 

 Use a drill bit with a 1/16-inch bit to drill pilot holes at each screw location. Keep the drill perfectly straight while drilling the main post. 

 If you are drilling into a stone or concrete lintel, use a 1/4 in. Diameter masonry drill bit and insert a lead dowel into each hole.

Step 5: Install the Mounting Brackets 

Hold the bracket in place, making sure that it lines up with the pilot holes of the drilled screws in the main post. 

 Secure the bracket with two flat head screws. 

 Install the remaining mounting brackets.

Step 6: Checking Brackets for Leveling 

 Hold a level between the two mounting brackets to see if they are level.

Step 7: Insert a thin wooden wedge 

 If the brackets are 1/8 inch or less off the plane, go to step 7. If the gap is greater, loosen the “upper” bracket screws. 

 Slide a wooden wedge or thin pieces of cardboard between the bracket and the main post. 

 Tighten the screws and recheck the height of the brackets. 

 Repeat if necessary, then cut off the excess washer with a craft knife.

 Loosen the small screws called reinforcement screws on the underside of the brackets.
